nd foster meaningful connections that transcend borders, promoting inclusive growth.
Darpan’s mission is to empower grassroots communities in Assam, India, by enhancing their role and participation in society. We achieve this through rigorous scientific research, humanistic scholarship, and artistic creation, fostering a vibrant community of learning. We collaborate with local communities to provide educational, technical, and cultural support, improving their quality of life. Partnering with industry and government, we aim to elevate workplace standards and drive economic and cultural development. Our initiatives extend to socio-economic activities, education, health, hygiene, sanitation awareness, traditional cultural promotion, sports development, and advancements in horticulture and agriculture. We also advocate environmental awareness and provide essential services for elderly underprivileged individuals.
Darpan’s strengths lie in its extensive experience and established presence in Assam since 1983-1984, focusing on various development aspects. As a state-level NGO, Darpan collaborates effectively with government agencies, institutions, and other NGOs. The organization boasts a dedicated team with expertise in academic and technical education, equipped to handle substantial projects with adequate manpower and infrastructure. Darpan’s strong relationships with state-level authorities and development institutions underscore its credibility and influence. With a track record in education and vocational training programs, Darpan operates in a decentralized manner, emphasizing participatory processes and systematic development approaches.
Darpan is empanelled with the Paints and Coatings Skill Council (PCSC) and has successfully conducted RPL training for 800 painters in Assam. We have mobilized beneficiaries from remote areas where the professional painters do not have a recognition of their skills. Through the RPL training, we have been able to give them the certification from PCSC under National Skill Development Council (NSDC). The RPL was conducted from November to December, 2020. All COVID-19 guidelines were strictly followed.
DARPAN is actively involved in implementing the Jal Jeevan Mission in Sonitpur, Udalguri, and Darrang districts of Assam as an Implementation Support Agency (ISA). Their role is pivotal in achieving the mission’s objective of ‘Har Ghar Jal’. To ensure effective project management, Village Water Sanitisation Committees (VWSC) have been established in each allocated village. These committees oversee the Water User Committees (WUC), which manage funds and resolve technical issues in coordination with the Public Health Engineering (PHE) departments of their respective districts. Additionally, water quality testing groups have been formed to monitor water quality. Various community engagement activities such as Community Level Meetings, Introductory Meetings, Focused Group Discussions, and Gram Sabhas have been conducted to foster cooperation among villagers. Open mic engagements have also been extensively utilized to ensure inclusive participation in the project.
Darpan Old Age Home was established on 1 March 2011 with the mission of providing a dignified and supportive living environment for elderly individuals. Located Beseria,Tezpur,Assam, it offers comprehensive care, including healthcare, recreational activities, and emotional support, ensuring the residents’ comfort and well-being in their later years of life.
Darpan, partnering with the Assam Skill Development Mission, operates multiple flexible training centers across Assam, offering vocational courses. With over 1200 trainees, we blend theory, practical skills, and personal development. Our centers and job roles are:
The handloom textile cottage industry is vital to rural Assam’s socio-economic life, especially for women and tribal communities. Despite Assam’s rich textile tradition, many women lack exposure to modern skills and technologies. Training in Chabua, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, and Tinsukia aims to upgrade skills, improve market access, and enhance product quality. The course covers jacquard design, tool maintenance, teamwork, safety, and market trends. Post-training, beneficiaries will be equipped to develop designs, maintain work areas, and understand market demands, thereby increasing their livelihood opportunities and professionalizing the handloom sector to compete with power loom products, promoting livelihood generation for tribal women.
Under the SarbaSiksha Abhiyan Mission, Darpan conducts specialized pre-vocational training at Residential Special Training Centres (RSTC) and Non-Residential Special Training Centres (NRSTC) across Assam. The “Toy Making for Boys” program focuses on enhancing fine motor skills, cognitive development, and creativity. Beginning with an introduction to toy anatomy and materials, instructors guide students through deconstructing and reconstructing stuffed toys, fostering abstract thinking and self-confidence as they create their own designs.
In parallel, the “Cutting and Knitting for Girls” initiative promotes concentration and cognitive skills through hands-on activities. Students start with paper-cutting exercises to understand shapes and precision before advancing to fabric cutting and knitting. Sewing machine use is also taught, emphasizing safety and proficiency. These programs not only equip children with practical skills but also instill a sense of achievement and readiness for future educational and vocational pursuits, contributing positively to their personal development and socio-economic potential.
